Kamel Al-Asmar’s Bio

Kamel Al-Asmar is an Arab social entrepreneur; Founder of Nakhweh; the first development and volunteerism network for the Arab world. Founded in 2009, Nakhweh is concerned with connecting people working in the development sector to expand opportunities, exchange ideas, share knowledge, as well as promote and share a culture of civic engagement and volunteerism in the region.

He is also Founder & Impact Communication Strategist at Ideation Box; a startup founded in 2009 and built its reputation as a leading provider of creative development and corporate communication solutions by working with top names, including the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation, Mowgli Foundation, INJAZ, Jordan River Foundation, Nuqul Groups, UNDP Egypt and more.

Al-Asmar was recently appointed as the Head of Communications & Community Engagement of Wamda, the enabling platform for entrepreneurs in the MENA region; working closely with the platform’s team on communications, events and branding; in addition to his involvement in the business development aspect of it.

Kamel is actively involved in entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, proactive citizenship and the empowerment of under-served communities. He works very closely with youth to spread a culture of proactivity, critical thinking and social responsibility.

For his work on Nakhweh, Al-Asmar received Takreem’s Young Entrepreneur of The Year Award for the year 2014, he was also named as one of Forbes Magazine 30 under 30 Social Entrepreneurs – Class 2014, and he received the prestigious Ashoka Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurs in 2012. In addition, he has been recognized by the King Abdullah II Award for Youth Innovation & Achievement (KAAYIA) as one of the top ten finalists for the year 2011 for which he received a grant during the special meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) at the Dead Sea. During the WEF. In 2007, Kamel made it to the top ten finalists of Queen Rania National Entrepreneurship Competition.

Kamel holds a bachelors degree in Computer Science from Princess Sumaya University for Technology in Amman, and held former positions in usability and information architecture, open source development, web design and social media with Akhtaboot; the leading career network for the middle east, and Jawaker; the largest card gaming community in the Arab world.
